Battle of the Brains

The Lutheran High School of Kansas City participated in an exciting STEM competition this fall known as Battle of the Brains.  This competition, sponsored by Burns & McDonnell, involves schools brainstorming and coming up with an exhibit concept for Science City.  Schools can earn a piece of $155,000+ in grants for STEM education and one school sees their idea come to life by seeing it acutally constructed and built in Science City.  So far, more than 11,000 students in 50 school districts have benefited from this immersive educational opportunity.

Our school’s Battle of the Brains team started meeting and brainstorming ideas for exhibits in August and met twice a week through the exhibit submission deadline of October 25th.  During that time, team members visited Science City for ideas of previous exhibits, brainstormed ideas for exhibits, wrote a proposal for an exhibit, videoed their proposal, made sketches of their exhibit idea, and turned in a cost estimate.  The team had a mentor from Burns & McDonnell, Mr. Craig Koenig, who came in to offer advice on the students’ proposals.

BOTB challenged our students to be creative and come up with a proposal for an interactive exhibit, see that proposal through from the idea stage to the writing and videoing stage, and finally to the submission stage.  Our BOTB team’s exhibit idea had to do with sound and communication, and was entitled, “I’m All Ears: The Art of Sound and Communication”.  Exhibit proposals will be judged from Oct 26th-Nov 15th and the top 20 finalists will be announced on November 16th.

Members of Lutheran High School's Battle of the Brains Team are Katie Hornbostel, Ellie Wegener, Venus Chen, Alex Agnos, Shelby West, John Zhang, Ethan Tanner, and Max Huebner. Faculty Sponsors are Mrs. Jonelle Hizer and Mr. Aaron Bruening.
